Turnpikes
The turnpike was crucial for the Industrial Revolution in transport, transforming the quality of roads, drastically reducing the cost and duration of travel, and bringing about an explosive growth in road transport. This made possible phenomena such as the building and growth of suburbs and satellite towns around major urban centers, these having previously been precluded by the time taken to travel even relatively short distances in winter.
